Month 5

December 13, 2022

How Far Along: 22 weeks 1 day

Size: Ear of corn or a water bottle. Crazy how big he’s getting!

Gender: It’s a boy!

Name: Fully decided! :) If you want a little (not helpful at all) hint, he’s named a little bit after me, and a little bit after Russ 😉

Movement: Holy cow, he is a-MOVING! All the time, but especially between like 8&10pm.

Fun Fact: People are already acting like my baby must be due very soon. It’s SO fun 😒 They’ll be like, “When are you due?” “Not til April 😅” “Ohhhhh 😳😳” But whatever, it’s not really a big deal 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣

Sleep: I’ve been saying I can’t wait for this baby to be born because I think I’ll sleep better with a newborn than I do while pregnant! 🤪 I wake up at least once every night, but usually 2-3x. To pee, to roll over, or also because I’ve been sick recently and so have my kids. I haven’t had any pregnancy insomnia for a few weeks now, so that’s a welcome change.

Weight Gain: Ha. 23.1 pounds. YIKES. But I just checked, and with Holly I was actually up 26.2 by this time, and with Ada I was up 23.5, so even though my belly LOOKS bigger this time around, it’s surprisingly my lowest weight gain for 5 months of pregnancy!

5 months pregnant with Ada, Holly, and Baby Boy

Symptoms: Pain has come along this month. Not too bad, but some. Mostly in my hips after sleeping (regardless of whether I sleep with a pillow between my legs or not), but also sometimes in my pelvic floor area. Baby feels heavy already, which is super exciting since I’ve still got 4 months to go. I’m also tired very very often, not sure if it’s because I don’t sleep well or because I don’t get enough sleep. And I’m definitely at the point where I need to sit down or support myself against a wall while I put on shoes or socks.

Diabetes: Ugh. Diabetes and pregnancy and holidays are not a good combination. It also took me way too long to make the necessary adjustments (increases) to all of my basal rates and carb ratios, so my last a1C was higher (7.6), but things are definitely getting on better track again now that I’ve been making changes more aggressively.

Cravings/Aversions: No, but I’ll take this opportunity to tell everyone that Darigold is the best version of egg nog (aka Christmas milk at our house), so don’t waste your time with other brands 🤣

Diet/Exercise: I’ve been getting back to my elliptical walking! But Baby seems very big and creates outward pressure on my belly (like he’s kicking, but constant), so that’s not super fun. My minimum baseline is 5 minutes/day, 6 days/week, but ideally I stay on for 15-20 minutes. Just trying to do SOMETHING 🤣 I eat a lot of nutritious and good things, but I’m still eating many treats, too 🙃

Missing Most: Sleep. Definitely uninterrupted sleep.

Nursery: The progress I’ve made on the nursery in the last month is to put “Baby’s nursery design” on my to-do list, but it’s my to-do list for after Christmas 🤣

Daddy: Russ recently felt Baby kick for the first time!

Ada & Holly: Holly has been so cute with my bump lately! The other day, she laid her head on my lap, and I said, “are you snuggling me?” and she said, “No, I’m snuggling Baby!” She also gives unprompted hugs and kisses to my belly.
Ada includes Baby in her prayers most of the time, which is really sweet. I feel like when I was a kid, my prayers were VERY repetitive — like always the same words in the same order. Her prayers seem a lot more thoughtful, so she says different things at different times about Baby.
Both girls know Baby’s name, so they always call him by name.

Highlights & Memories:

  • After many years of talking about it, Russ’s parents are moving to Utah! I’m so excited that they’ll be around more often to see this new little baby (and of course our girls)! They always help a ton when our kids are born (since our babies are usually in the NICU for a few weeks), and it will be nice to not be pulling them too far from home if we need their help early on. (When Holly was born, they stayed at our house for 7-10 days or so to help with Ada, and it was INCREDIBLY helpful! But I also know that my MIL likes to be in her home, so I think I felt a bit stressed about keeping her away from her home for so long.)

  • Thanksgiving pregnant is not my favorite thing! 🤣 I felt like I couldn’t fit much food in my belly because there’s so much baby in my belly! Probably it was that I ate too many of the appetizers, but I’ve been blaming the baby 🙈🤣

Can’t Wait For: This will be my third C-section, and I’ve never seen my babies pulled out before. The first time there was a blue sheet blocking my view (didn’t know there was another option). The second time I asked for a clear sheet, but my angle didn’t allow me to see through it (didn’t know they could adjust my angle). THIS time, I’m not letting them cut me open until I know I can see it! Because I’ve heard of C-section mamas seeing their kids born and I WANT TO BE ONE OF THEM! 🤣
